Diethyl malonate is an important intermediate in the preparation of 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine, which can be used for the preparation of sulfonylurea herbicides, such as benzylsulfuron-methyl, pyrisulfuron-methyl, nicosulfuron-methyl, etc., and is also an intermediate used in medicine for sulfonamides and barbiturates. It can also be used in gas chromatographic Chemicalbook spectroscopy fixative solution (maximum use temperature 40°C, solvent benzene, chloro form, ethanol) to characterise amm onia and potassium.
